Copper engraving

Oldest graphical gravure printing technique. The draft of a print is invertedly applied on a polished copper plate. Recesses are then cut along the outlines of the drawing with a graver. Chiselled edges are later smoothed with a scraper. The resulting recesses absorb the ink and transfer it to the moistened paper. Special forms of the copper engraving are etchings and aquatint. See also copper gravure printing.
