Autotype

From Greek "autos" (self) and "typos" (blow, beat). A letterpress printing technique invented by Georg Meisenbach in 1882 to mimeograph images with various nuances in grey. The printing plate is manufactured photochemigraphically with the printing elements protruding from the surface. These elements consist of dots of different sizes that absorb different amounts of ink during printing and thus lead to different nuances.
