Beethoven Discography

Dr. Klaus Steltmann, a member of the Beethoven-Haus Association, has kindly offered to publish his directory of all Beethoven works on the homepage of the Beethoven-Haus. With over 300 pages the discography lists for example 140 recordings of the 5th Symphony, featuring 91 conductors, among those five recordings with Otto Klemperer, eight with Wilhelm Furtwängler and 14 with Herbert von Karajan. The directory can be viewed as a PDF document on the library's Catalogue page. In order to complete the compilation, Mr. Steltmann is asking for your help. Please read the notes concerning his discography.

Mr. Steltmann's own collection constitutes the directory's foundation. For many years, the former university teacher has been collecting CDs. Initially, he tried to obtain one recording of each composition, no matter how rarely it had been recorded. Later, he added more recordings and also recordings of adaptations of Beethoven works as well as CDs with music from Beethoven's less well-known contemporaries.

Mr. Steltmann's generous decision puts the library of the Beethoven-Haus in a very lucky position. On its own, it can only establish a small and incomplete media collection. If needed, the library can revert to Mr. Steltmann's private collection. Already a few years ago did Dr. Klaus Steltmann cede historical recordings to the Beethoven-Haus and thus set the course for the permanent protection of his collection. It is his wish that his collection shall one day be fully handed over to the library.
