Konzert für Violine und Orchester (D-Dur) op. 61
Listening samples
Composition
November / Dezember 1806, Um- und Überarbeitung Ende April / Anfang Mai 1807
dedicated to Stephan von Breuning
Beethoven's Violin Concerto is not his first work for solo violin and orchestra. It was preceded by an early concerto (WoO 5), of which only a fragment remains, and the two Romances op. 40 and 50. The only completed violin concerto was written in the two last months of 1806. It was especially composed for a virtuoso: Beethoven wrote it for the academy of the violinist Franz Clement on 23 December 1806. The concerto was written at short-term notice and Thayer wrote, Clement sight-read it "without any rehearsal beforehand". After the first performance, Beethoven revised the solo part: in the autograph score the revised version can be clearly differentiated from the first stage. At the end of April 1807 Beethoven once again turned to the concerto. On 20 April 1807 he had sold several works to the London publisher and pianist Muzio Clementi, including the Violin Concerto. Clementi not only published the actual violin concerto but also initiated an arrangement of it for piano and orchestra. Whilst doing the arrangement Beethoven again revised the solo violin part in May and June 1807. This final version of the violin part is the one we know today and the one which is performed. Interestingly, the version for piano and orchestra was published at least six months before the "original" for violin and orchestra. (J.R.)
