Summary
Beethoven assures his publishers in Leipzig that he is definitely interested in an exclusive contract with them for Germany. However, he reserves the right to sell single works abroad if the offers are lucrative, in particular if he should leave the country ("which might possibly happen"). In the case of a foreign deal the sum Breitkopf & Härtel has to pay will be less. Beethoven asks them to comment on this suggestion.
At the same time Beethoven offers them the Quartets op. 59, the Piano Concerto op. 58 and the Symphony op. 60. He also once again recommends the Opera op. 72 and the Oratorio op. 85.
Finally he stresses that the greetings he had sent in his last letter of 5 July (HCB Br 67, BG 254) to Friedrich Rochlitz and August Eberhard Müller had not been intended ironically, "I really sent greetings from the heart without any other intention or misinterpretation" (which was not absolutely clear from the formulation he had chosen).
In a postscript on the back of the envelope he informs them of his address at Prince Lichnowsky's in Troppau/Silesia.
