Things worth knowing
Separate sketch leaf
This sketch leaf with Beethoven's jottings for the Pastoral Symphony op. 68 has only survived as a single leaf. Beethoven mainly worked on the Pastoral Symphony in a single sketchbook which is today known as the "Pastoral Symphony Sketchbook" (it is located in the British Library in London). It has been proven that the leaf shown here was not part of this book, which clearly shows that the composer also made drafts that were not included in a sketchbook. The type of sketches - they are one-part - further shows that the leaf cannot be seen as a link between the sketchbook and the autograph score, as the sketches it contains are not advanced enough.
