In many plays music is an integrated part of the plot (choir performances on stage or during plays were already known as part of the Greek tragedies in the ancient world). For all his dramas poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had a musical concept which he outlined by means of numerous stage directions. His tragedy "Egmont" not only contains songs to be sung on stage but also background music. When Klärchen dies, music expressing her demise should begin. The scene of Egmont sleeping in prison is to accompanied by music as well. Goethe wanted his drama to end with a victory symphony. The poet wrote the play with directions for music but did not provide the music - a common problem for stage and theatre directors. In the autumn of 1809 Joseph Hartl, director of the Court Theatre, solved this issue by asking Beethoven to compose the music for a new staging of "Egmont". In line with the then tradition, Beethoven not only set the scenes to music but also added an overture and intermission music. For sure, this order not only pleased Beethoven financially but the tragedy also appealed to his political opinion and view. Goethe's play focuses on the Netherlands' struggle for liberation from the Spanish occupation at the beginning of the 16th century. The expressed thought of freedom probably appealed to Beethoven. In 1809 Austria suffered under Napoleon's occupation and Egmont's struggle for freedom mirrored Beethoven's life experience and hopes of the years 1809 and 1810. (J.R.)
