Summary
Beethoven had become acquainted with the von Schadens, a married couple, on his first journey to Vienna in 1787 before he was 17 years old. However, due to his mother's serious illness he was forced to cut this journey short. In a letter to von Schaden Beethoven apologizes for his long silence and describes his mother's illness and death, as well as his own sad emotional state. Before his departure from Augsburg, von Schaden had obviously lent Beethoven some money. On account of his rather difficult financial situation Beethoven asks to be allowed to pay back the sum at a later date.
