Summary
Josephine von Deym drafts a letter in which she admits her love and affection for Beethoven. However, she does qualify this, "I love you inexpressibly - as one pious mind loves another - are you not able to do so too? At the moment I am not responsive to other kinds of love -". Their friendship finally failed due to their fundamentally different views of love; Beethoven's was passionate and demanding, Josephine's intimate and friendly.
