Summary
Beethoven turns to the musical director of the Philharmonic Society in London, George Smart, asking him for financial support. The Society had already corresponded with him several times (the first time in 1816) concerning an academy. Now for business reasons (he is practically no longer able to work) Beethoven feels obliged to ask for an academy for his benefit.
Beethoven adds he has turned to Moscheles (W 27, BGA 2260) and Stumpff with the same request. In February 1827 Beethoven was already critically ill. He is already so weak that he can only dictate the letter - he merely signed it.
