Abstract:

Beethoven probably got to know Baron von Schaden and his wife Nanette, an excellent pianist, on his journey to Vienna in March 1787. On his way back to Bonn at the end of April 1787 he visited them in Augsburg. In his letter of 15 September 1787 Beethoven refers to this meeting. He tells them of the death of his mother and apologises for his long silence, as well as the fact that he is not able to repay the money that he has borrowed. It is not known whether Beethoven maintained contact with the Schadens after 1787.
