Etching printing technique and hand-press copper printing are among the most refined crafted printing techniques.
The artist engraves the motive in a copper plate that is then used for etching. In hand-press copper printing also known as helioengraving the motive is etched in the plate using a complex photographic and crafted process.
Heavy hand-made paper is used for printing. Just like 500 years ago the copper plate is inked manually. Only when all recesses are thoroughly filled with ink and the raised surfaces are as clean as they were before inking, the resulting print will show the velvety characteristic and fine lines that are typical for old and precious engravings.
The etching or hand impression is then obtained in a single press run with a pressure of about 16 tons. For any other copy the whole process is repeated.
