Beethoven-Haus announces fundraising campaign "Weltklassisch - eine Initiative für Beethoven"
Bonn/Berlin, 27.4.07 - Probably for the last time, an important Beethoven manuscript is up for sale: the original manuscript of the Diabelli Variations. The Bonn Beethoven-Haus has the unique opportunity to purchase this important manuscript for its collection. Therefore, the institution launched a fundraising campaign called "Weltklassisch - eine Initiative für Beethoven" (World classics - an initiative for Beethoven) on April 27. To purchase the manuscript, the Beethoven-Haus will need to raise two million Euro. This amount will have to be financed by donations.
According to plans of the Beethoven-Haus the document will then be accessible for the first time as a facsimile edition and digitally on the Internet. Besides the Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach, the co-called Diabelli Variations are regarded as the most important variations cycle in music history. At the start-up event of the fundraising campaign Kurt Masur, conductor and chairman of the Beethoven-Haus, called on the population to seize this unique opportunity to acquire the so far unpublished manuscript. The original manuscript allows significant insights into Beethoven's work as it contains last revisions made by the composer. "The more familiar we become with Beethoven's work, the better we will understand not only the composer but also out own culture", said Masur. The document is the last proven original manuscript of an important Beethoven work still in private possession and therefore up for sale.
Donations for the acquisition of the original manuscript can be made on the Internet at www.weltklassisch.de (in German). Music aficionados have the option of taking over an online sheet music patronage with a value of 120 or 60 Euro or purchasing a special edition CD of the Diabelli Variations. All revenue will go towards the fundraising campaign. Traditional online donations are also welcome.
How to donate
