Beethoven tombs

After his death Beethoven was buried on the local cemetery in Vienna-Währingen. One year later, friends and admirers had a monument erected. In 1888 it was decided to transfer Beethoven's remains to a tomb of honour on Vienna's Central Cemetery where an accurate replica of the original tombstone was raised. This explains why today depictions of two Beethoven tombs exist: One at the original burial site (now the Schubert park) and another one on Vienna's Central Cemetery.
