Things worth knowing
In the mid-twentieth century a Spanish lady presented the Beethoven-Haus with a glass cabinet, containing a photograph of Beethoven's last apartment as well as a 3.5cm wide fragment, which according to the donor was taken from the wall in the room in which Beethoven died. The fragment is from the top of the wall where it joined the ceiling and was probably removed in autumn 1903, when the plans to demolish the Schwarzspanierhaus were made public. The different colours of the wall in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries can clearly be seen.(S.B.)
